Nearly 16,000 names suggested for Viking XPRS
Viking Line's newbuilding Viking XPRS, which will start operating between
Helsinki and Tallinn in early 2008, is nearing completion in Helsinki. The
vessel will be christened and launched on 14 September at Aker Yards' Helsinki
docks. A competition was arranged at Viking Line's website to propose names for
the newbuilding. Nearly 16,000 suggestions were put forward, completely
exceeding all expectations. Entries were received in great numbers from such
countries as Finland, Estonia, Sweden, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia,
Spain, USA, Denmark and Norway. The final decision will be made by Viking Line
management.
The winner will have the choice between two main prizes: a day cruise to Tallinn
with 30 of his or her friends, or a luxury cruise for 12 from Helsinki to
Stockholm. In addition to travel and cabins, both alternatives also include
meals. In case the prize-winning name was suggested by several persons, there
will be a draw to select the winner.
Viking XPRS will replace M/S Rosella, which is currently operating on the
Helsinki-Tallinn route. The vessel's new service concept, which has been under
development for years, will combine the best features of traditional passenger
and car ferries and catamarans: comfort, onboard service and safety together
with rapid crossings in all weather conditions. Viking XPRS also features the
best available technologies for minimising environmental impacts.
At the time of launching, the hull of the vessel will already be almost
complete, after which the spotlight will be on interior decoration. "We have
already hoisted in several cabins, which feels good and shows that the interior
decoration has got to a concrete start", explains Project Manager Kaj Jansson
from Viking Line.
